Known as Nova Goa till around 1917 

and also as Cidade de Goa.

Later Pangim and now Panaji.

Why is Panaji famous?

Etymology. The city was renamed from Panjim in English to Panaji, its present official name in the 1980s. The Portuguese name was Pangim.
