The Surla Tar Masjid in Bicholim , Goa is a lesser known cousin of its relatively more famous counter part of Safa Masjid in Ponda Goa.

Built in the rule of Ibrahim Adil Shah of Bijapur , the mosque stands in a stunning setting surrounded by lush green palms and the river mandovi behind it. The tank of the mosque is built in laterite with beautiful arches and is mostly used by cattle for water today

The mosque also has remnants of laterite columns around it topped with basalt. There is a dargah of a Sufi pir ( locally known as Pira Dev ) near it who is revered by both hindus and muslims in the village.

The masjid lost most of its structure due to ravages of time and was restored in 1956.

This is 1 of the only 3 remaining medieval mosques of Goa. I wasn't aware of it until an Instagram follower pointed it out and I made a beeline for this one on my last day in Goa.

The place is so picturesque that the visit was worth it.
